Look closely...

...and you never know what you'll see!


Here's an "aerial view" of a small, high tidepool that's drying up.


When I bent down for a closer look, many tiny salt crystals were visible on the bottom and floating on the surface:


An even closer view revealed their wonderful shapes:


Some of the crystals were larger in the photo below, the largest crystal was at least several millimeters across.  I don't know anything about crystal formation, but it looks like the crystals might be developing an octahedral geometry (8-sided; 4 triangular faces up and 4 down) .
