Just a quick note that there are lots of very large By-the-wind Sailors (Velella velella) washing ashore right now. Many are in the range of 7-10 cm long. Photo from 30 July 2025.
It also crossed my mind whether the tsunami would affect the movement of Velella, but I'm not sure. It's possible, but Velella's sail is influenced by wind, and I'm not sure how much tsunami waves in the open ocean would change the position of Velella? As far as I know, tsunami waves are quite small in the open ocean (although traveling very fast). Not sure if anyone knows, but I'm curious, too!
Maybe brought to us by Kamchatka's movement?
