Thanks! Yeah, I think the lighting is partly what makes this shot. It was ~6:30 p.m. or so. The lighting around sunset is always a nice time to see whale spouts when they're lit up from behind, and in this case it highlighted the water coming off the whale.
Of course, I had no control over the pelicans, but I agree that they add a lot to the photo. Bonus is right, as I didn't even know whether I was pressing the shutter in time to catch the breach, never mind the nearby pelicans, too!
Wow how lucky to see that! A cherry on top would be a green flash.

DeleteMust be lots of fish out there right now -- lots of whale and seabird activity (pelicans, terns, gulls, etc.).
