At it again

There were lots of Humpback Whales visible off Bodega Head tonight (7 September 2025)  mostly spouts, fins, and flukes, but a few breaches, too.

  1. Wow how lucky to see that! A cherry on top would be a green flash.

    1. :) Hahaha!

I'm not sure my green flash photo came out well enough to share, but it was so much fun to see one! The green flash season begins!

  2. Your worst photos are really good. Most are great. This one is mind-blowing.

    1. Hi, Al!

Thanks so much for your thoughts! My worse photos are pretty awful and don't often make it to the blog, but I also think it's interesting that any photo can tell a story! :)

    1. Got lucky! Especially with the whales being out pretty far last night...and not many of them breaching.

I'm glad to know whales are out there doing this, even when we're not looking.

    1. :) Serendipitous is right! Or, a fluke! :)

Must be lots of fish out there right now -- lots of whale and seabird activity (pelicans, terns, gulls, etc.).

  5. Awesome photo, Jackie! Love the clarity of the spray coming off that fluke, and the pelicans are a nice bonus.

    1. Hi, John!

Thanks! Yeah, I think the lighting is partly what makes this shot. It was ~6:30 p.m. or so. The lighting around sunset is always a nice time to see whale spouts when they're lit up from behind, and in this case it highlighted the water coming off the whale.

Of course, I had no control over the pelicans, but I agree that they add a lot to the photo. Bonus is right, as I didn't even know whether I was pressing the shutter in time to catch the breach, never mind the nearby pelicans, too!

The photo was a surprise to me, which was fun!

      :) Jackie
