Cooperation

I couldn't resist the early evening light on these foraging American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos).  All photographs were taken on 4 June 2012 in Gaffney Cove at the southern end of Bodega Harbor.

American White Pelicans are cooperative foragers.  Their coordinated movements drive fish into shallow water.  Pelicans feeding in this way, with synchronized bill dipping, have higher capture rates and catch larger fish.
