Looking for flies
I'm running out of time tonight, but I'll share this nice picture of a Red Phalarope from Doran Beach. Hundreds of Red Phalaropes were feeding along the beach today (in the water and on the sand). I think they were primarily feeding on flies.
I don't know how long they'll stay, but if you're interested in trying to see Red Phalaropes, you might try looking between the whale monument and the North Jetty (see park map here).
Thanks for this! I'm always checking the channel flowing into the Doran Ponds for Northern or Red-Necked Phalaropes during migration - such pretty little charmers! But don't think I've seen one of these guys and don't think I'd ever seen their feet! So large for such a dainty little creature but of course they're paddlers - well spinners actually. : -) Did they blow in with the storm?
ReplyDeleteHi, Hollis! Yes, in general Red Phalaropes aren't as common near shore as Red-necked Phalaropes. But storm conditions can change that, and that's what happened during the last week. The Red Phalaropes were still around as of today (1 November 2016), so perhaps you'll catch up with them. I had some wonderful views of them near Gaffney Point today.
