Colorful mystery

It's been a while since I've posted a mystery close-up photo, so here you go!  Can you tell what type of organism this is?

Feel free to let me know if you have a guess.  (And if you want a hint, or have a question, I'll try to respond.)  I'll reveal the answer tomorrow night.  :)

  1. Hi, Bill!

Not a shrimp, but it is an arthropod.

  2. Maybe an isopod?

  3. Another good guess, but not an isopod.

I've also received several guesses that it's a chiton, but it's not a chiton.

This is a tough one, but here are a couple of hints:

    It has six legs.

You can find them in the highest part of the intertidal zone, but they're more terrestrial than marine.

  4. I'LL TRY AGAIN. MAYBE A ROCK LOUSE?

  5. Hi, Tom!

I like your thinking, as these animals are in the same habitat as the rock louse that you're thinking of.

I'll give another hint (this time a bigger one), but it's still a little tricky because this group of animals might not be that well known to many people. It's a type of insect!

And why not, here are a couple more hints -- it has a fairly long "tail" and it's a good jumper!

  6. Maybe sandhoppers or sand fleas? Except, I don't think they have tails.
