I read a great article in the LA Times this morning about a Burrowing Owl making an appearance (and a difference) at an elementary school in downtown Los Angeles. One of the take-home messages was that having even a little bit of nature next to an urban school helps spark an interest in natural history and improves science skills. If you're interested, you can read the article here.
The article also mentions that owls are thought to be good luck in Guatemala (where some of the students' families are from).
So, here's a good luck Burrowing Owl for you!
Best wishes for a 2017 filled with natural history observations that spark your curiosity and make you want to spend even more time outdoors.
Happy New Year!!
