The offshore buoy was reporting wave heights of ~22 feet earlier today (23 December 2024). These were big waves, so I took a few photos for the record.
Each photo has at least one gull in front of the wave for scale. The gulls seem to love surfing the winds off these waves, which is fun to watch. You can click on the images for larger versions.

For much of the day yesterday the ocean was so rough it was hard to distinguish the waves -- sometimes I call those "whiteout" conditions. But there was a short time in the morning when the visibility was good enough for a few photos.
Not sure if these were related to the waves that were surfed at Waimea Bay the day before (at the Eddie), but there was a lot of energy coming towards shore!
