Spring green

Eric spotted this beautiful green hairstreak during a walk in Glen Ellen this afternoon (29 March 2025).  The taxonomy of this group has been challenging, but it sounds like this is currently being called Lotus Hairstreak (Callophrys dumetorum).

With many thanks to Eric for sharp eyes and patience with the camera, and to Alan for assisting with the identification and taxonomy update.

Hello! This is a beautiful butterfly. We think it may be sitting on an umbel of elderflowers. What do you think?/ Augusta & Flori

Hi, August & Flori! Good question about the flowers! I was curious, too, and actually looked for a plant tag (we were at the Sonoma Botanical Garden where many plants are labelled), but I couldn't find one. So I'm not sure about which shrub this is, but I'd love to know. If anyone has input, feel free to let me know!
