Cape Cod reflections

I was at a family wedding on Cape Cod recently (Congratulations, Katie & Aiden!), so here are a few quick shots from Massachusetts.

Above, Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa).

Next, sandbars and sky:

And a sunrise, too:

Rising and setting

We've been working lots of very early morning low tides recently, so here's a sunrise/moonset photo from last week.

Mesa Reyes?

Above, sunrise from Cotati on 18 October 2022...

...and below, a mirage of Point Reyes as seen from Bodega Head near sunset.  (Eric came up with the name "Mesa Reyes" because of the flat-topped and steep-sided appearance.)

There were all sorts of signs of warmer air temperatures today, including a bat swooping around our yard when we got home from work.  In Bodega Bay it looks like air temperatures reached ~65-68°F (~18-20°C) today.

P.S.  For an older series of mirage images, see "Can you believe your eyes?" from 7 April 2016.

Dawn of a new year

This one goes out to my mom.  She always takes a sunrise photo on New Year's Day, and this year I took one, too.  Although I'm a bit late in sharing it, this is the sunrise from Cotati on 1 January 2020.

Sunrise clouds

I've always enjoyed getting up at sunrise — it feels like a very special time of day, when the world is just waking up.  This morning I stepped outside to a beautiful sky — soft pink lighting up the undersides of the clouds on the eastern horizon.  Somehow it seemed like an appropriate color, given the heat of the last few days.  It was 103°F in Cotati yesterday!

Sunrise moon

I looked up around sunrise this morning to see pale pink clouds below a Last Quarter moon:

A closer look (click on the image for a larger version):

Recently I've been reading a book about tides, so I've been thinking about the moon quite a bit.  How lucky are we to have such a nice moon orbiting the Earth!
