Cape Cod reflections

I was at a family wedding on Cape Cod recently (Congratulations, Katie & Aiden!), so here are a few quick shots from Massachusetts.

Above, Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa).

Next, sandbars and sky:

And a sunrise, too:

Green on the horizon

Wasn't sure if we'd see one tonight, but there it was, glowing green on the horizon.  Photographed from Bodega Head on 28 January 2026.  [You can click on the image for a slightly better version of the photo.]

Winter flashes

We've seen several green flashes this week, so if it's a clear night and you're at the coast at sunset, keep an eye on the horizon!  (But don't look until the sun is mostly below the horizon!)

Calm seas and...a flash!

While watching the sunset tonight (24 October 2024), it felt like good conditions for a green flash.

Sure enough!  Nice green color as the sun disappeared below the horizon.  Here's a tiny bit of it:

Breach!

I know, it's a bit distant and blurry, but there were some nice Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) breaches out near the horizon today off Bodega Head.  Some full body breaches (with giant splashes), some flipper-slapping, some lob-tailing, some spouts, fins, and flukes.  A little bit of everything!  So here's one photo for the record on 24 June 2021.

Sunset layers

An interesting sunset tonight (16 October 2020), with layers of light floating above the horizon.  I'm guessing there was some heat distortion, which isn't surprising for such a warm day.  [It was much hotter inland, but it reached at least 76°F (24°C) in Bodega Bay today.]
