Fall beauty

A beautiful DeKay's Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi) crossing a trail in Chatham, MA, today (29 September 2022).

This is a relatively small snake it was approximately 12 inches long (and that's about average size for this species).

Here's a view of the entire snake:

And I can't help ending with a close-up.  The coloration and markings are subtle, but check out the blueish iridescence on top of the head:

I've never seen one of these. Thank you for posting a photo of this handsome critter!

Thanks for the comments!

Not sure what happened, but today I realized that it wasn't possible to click on the third photo for a larger version. I've fixed that now, so if anyone wants to see a larger version of the close-up, it should be available now.

Best,
Jackie

Hello, Augusta and Flori!

Nice to hear from you! We had contemplated trying to get up to Maine last week, but just didn't have quite enough time between visits with family in MA. Maybe next time? It's hard for me to believe it's been so long since we've been in Maine, but I really miss it, so maybe next time! We'll keep in touch!
