This photo is so beautiful it looks like a painting! The atmospheric conditions at Bodega Head are stunning sometimes, like the one of upwelling that you shared here Monday. Thanks. I love your blog. I love Bodega Head!

Off topic, but you're the one to ask: what months of the year are ticks most active in the dunes. My wife and I enjoy hiking in the dunes of the state park and head, but we want to avoid the "tickiest" months of the year. Which are they? (We have been out, tick free, many times so far in 2022 and want to keep hiking as long as possible.

Hi, Dan!

Well, I think of the spring and early summer as being the worse times for ticks. But their abundance varies from year to year, and they're active year-round in Sonoma County, so it's always good to be vigilant whenever you're in areas where there could be ticks.

The CDPH has a chart that illustrates the seasonality of ticks in California, showing the adults most active in winter/spring and the nymphs most active in spring/early summer: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/CDPH%20Document%20Library/SeasonalTickRiskGraphic.pdf

There's general info about ticks and Lyme Disease here: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/LymeDisease.aspx

I hope this helps!

Thanks, Jackie. Very helpful. We sure enjoy hiking in the dunes. We'll be more vigilant. I was under the mistaken impression that in winter months ticks were dormant. Your blog is a pleasure we enjoy.
