Got one!
Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis), just after extracting a seed from a pine cone. Photographed on 3 February 2018.
Indeed, the sound of intense pecking was what drew my attention to this determined forager! I heard the loud pecking and wondered what was going on, and then I eventually located the nuthatch pounding on the pine cone!

Must have been some tenacious pecking to get a seed out of that tough-looking cone.
