Color in the clouds

The rainbows continued today (22 April 2026).  Here's one that appeared high in the clouds over Sonoma Mountain at the end of the day.

Earth Day

Passing showers during the early morning of 21 April 2026 brought views of several rainbows.  Here's a quick shot to help celebrate Earth Day.

Remember to go outside today and send out thanks to the Earth.  As David Byrne says, "She's the only one we have."

Sunset rainbow

After off and on rain showers for most of the day (12 April 2026), Eric spotted a brilliant rainbow to the southeast of Cotati at sunset.

Christmas bow

Such dynamic weather today (25 December 2025).  Frequently the conditions were different on either side of our house.  Sun on the east side and rain on the west side led to a bright rainbow this morning.

A little rain, a lot of color

An amazing rainbow between Bloomfield and Valley Ford this morning (14 October 2025).

This was a full rainbow, but I could only get photos of either end.

Above is the east end, below is the view to the west:

So bright!

A little rain, a little color

A rainbow appeared briefly to the east when we got home from work tonight (13 October 2025).

Looks like we received ~0.5 inch of rain in Bodega Bay today.

Clearing showers

Clearing showers at the end of the day today (17 March 2025) produced a beautiful rainbow to the east.  And who was at the end of that rainbow?

The Anna's Hummingbird on her nest -- a little green (and a pot of gold?) for St. Patrick's Day!  ;)

Elemental

One of the things I enjoyed most about Iceland is how close you feel to the basic elements of the earth.

Here are some photos that represent different forms of earth, water, and air.  As always, you can click on the images for larger versions.

The colors of water and light

We stopped at some impressive waterfalls near Skógar today, and the light was just right for beautiful rainbows next to the falls.

This day

Okay, I'll admit that I've been distracted by the Olympics recently, so apologies for not posting very much.  Sometimes when I need a quick idea for a post, I'll go back to a previous year at around the same date to see if a photo strikes me sort of like a "This Day in NHBH History."

Some of you might remember these rainbow clouds from August 2022.

So beautiful!

In time

We arrived home too late for the rain shower, but in time for a rainbow to our south.  Photographed 30 September 2023.  Happy for a little rain!

Passing rainbow

No photos today, but here's one from yesterday.  A very bright rainbow in a passing shower to the east at the end of the day (27 February 2023).  The weather has certainly been dynamic lately!

A sea of color

The skies turned quite dark yesterday morning (24 February 2023), so I stepped outside to see what was happening.  When a rainbow appeared over the ocean to the north, I was glad I had a camera with me!

Break in the storm

There were 20-30 foot swells at the coast today.  It's always hard to judge scale when looking at wave photos.  Can you find the two gulls in the photo above?  [You can click on the image for a larger version.]

And here's a different view:

Those are large waves!  While documenting some storm impacts, I came across a group of Black Oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani) huddled together on the upper beach.  It looked like they were just trying to get some rest:

Although there's more rain on the way, when I returned to Cotati there was a break in the clouds and a rainbow spreading across the sky to the east:

Take care during these stormy conditions.  💗

Afternoon rainbow and sunset spindrift

It was overcast and raining for most the day (2 January 2023) and then around sunset the sky became interesting, with a bright rainbow to the east and dramatic lighting on the waves to the west.

Although faint, here's a photo of the rainbow with the moon:

And here are two wave photos, with sunset lighting up the spindrift:

Sounds like we'll be seeing quite a bit of rain this week.

A night for rainbows

Wow!  There were rainbows everywhere we looked on the way home from work tonight.  And I think this is one of the brightest I've ever seen.  Photographed from Stony Point Road on 21 April 2022.

Colors in the drift

This one is from earlier in January.  I like the way the rainbow colors appear along the different sections of the wave.

Showers and light

Nice to hear some rain in the early evening tonight (17 October 2021).  Eric looked out at ~6 p.m. and noticed this amazing double rainbow to the east.

Here's a corner view at the north end:

And another view from the south end:

Sounds like more rain is on the way this week, for which I'm feeling very thankful.

Rainbow connection

So nice to see some heavy drizzle and rain showers today (27 September 2021).  On our way home from work, conditions were just right for rainbows and we counted at least five!

Chance of rainbows?

Tonight I started wondering, "What if weather forecasts included the chance of rainbows (like a chance of showers)?"  Or maybe it's just more fun to be watching the sky and trying to predict whether the conditions are right for a rainbow to appear?  There sure were some beauties today (3 February 2021)!

I photographed this one on the way home from work late in the day.
